MedX Conference

On May 1, 2021, Med nā€™ Ed had the opportunity to partner with The Ripple Effect and Med Debrief to initiate, develop, and host an online conference known as MedX. MedX encourages the youth to educate themselves about humanitarian issues from a medical standpoint. The topic of this conference in particular was healthcare for refugees and the general refugee crisis. We were thrilled to have two incredible guest speakers, Doctor Zahra Goliaei and medical student Sumara Stroshein, who discussed what the refugee crisis looks like from a global perspective and the importance of getting involved with humanitarian organizations to make a difference. Following this conversation, Shreya Gupta, representing Med nā€™ Ed, discussed various medical issues that are commonly faced by refugees, which led to an analysis on solutions to these issues presented by Renee Guerville from Med Debrief. Finally, Cynthia Li and Grace Kim representing The Ripple Effect discussed how to take action and provided informative resources that would be of benefit to the audience. The conference was wrapped up with an online simulation of an escape room activity in which participants were given the opportunity to work through puzzles that deepened their understanding of the refugee crisis and the common obstacles they face. Overall, the conference was a huge success, and we hope to transform MedX into a series in the future in which we can discuss various lesser-known issues from a medical perspective and educate the public.
